The Lifesaving Act of Secure Firearm Storage: Essential Findings from a New Journal of American Medicine Study
The Lifesaving Act of Secure Firearm Storage: Essential Findings from a New Journal of American Medicine Study
This JAMA study underscores the dangers of unlocked, loaded firearms in the home that increase the risk of unintentional injuries, suicide, mass shootings, and school shootings.
An estimated 7 million children in the U.S. live in households where at least one firearm is unlocked and loaded.
1 in 5 gun-owning households have firearms easily accessible to children.
An estimated 32 million children in the United States live in homes with firearms.
Only about 35% of gun-owning parents surveyed reported storing their weapons in the safest possible way—both unloaded and locked up.
The number of kids in the U.S. who live in households with at least one firearm unlocked and loaded is approximately 50% higher than previously understood.
Guns are the leading cause of death for children in America. This is not a partisan issue—it’s a public health crisis. Teachers Unify is committed to spreading the lifesaving message of secure storage, especially through school messaging.

I want to be part of a community that speaks up, supports one another, and pushes for real change, because safety and mental health have to be a priority, not an afterthought.” – Denise Nieto Hernandez
